Emergency Preparedness

A disaster or emergency can strike at any time and it’s important to be prepared for any situation. You should be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for at least 72 hours. Joint Emergency Management Program

The Town of Fairview has partnered with the MD of Fairview No. 136 to develop, administer, and implement the Joint Emergency Management Plan which is comprised of:

  • Joint Emergency Management Advisory Committee
  • Joint Emergent Management Agency
  • Joint Emergency Management Plan (JEMP)

The purpose of Joint Emergency Management Planning allows us to work collaboratively in providing a comprehensive framework which established organization structure, assigns roles and responsibilities, coordination of resources and training to ensure effective execution of emergency management in the Town of Fairview and the MD of Fairview No. 136.

As partners, both municipalities have jointly committed to the provision of adequate resources, support and accountability to ensure that the Joint Emergency Management Plan is maintained, and that both municipalities are adequately prepared in the event of an emergency or disaster.

The Joint Emergency Management Advisory Committee is established by Bylaw No. 1055/PS/2019.

The committee:

  • Advises the Councils of the Town of Fairview and the Municipal District of Fairview No. 136 on the status of the Joint Emergency Management Program;
  • Provides guidance and direction to the Joint Emergency Management Agency with regards to emergency prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery;
  • Ensures the efficient and effective operation of the Joint Emergency Management Agency; and,
  • Approves the annual operating budget for the Joint Emergency Management Program.

The Joint Emergency Management Committee consists of the following members:

  • Reeve, Municipal District of Fairview No. 136
  • Mayor, Town of Fairview
  • Councillor, Municipal District of Fairview No. 136
  • Councillor, Town of Fairview
  • Director and Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Municipal District of Fairview No. 136
  • Director and Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Town of Fairview
  • Director of FCSS (Advisory Member)

The Joint Emergency Management Plan (JEMP) is established under the authority of:

The JEMP:

  • Identifies and assesses potential risks and ensures mitigation or prevention measures are in place to minimize or eliminate risk;
  • Ensures municipal employees receive adequate training and education to support emergency response planning and response;
  • Enables both municipalities to respond in a prompt, efficient and coordinated manner to emergencies
  • Provides both municipalities the tools to promote public emergency preparedness; and,
  • Bolsters and supports municipal recovery and following an emergency or disaster.

The mandate of the JEMP is to provide for the safety of residents and visitors to the Town of Fairview and the Municipal District of Fairview No. 136, and to strengthen community resilience in the face of both natural and human­ induced emergencies and disasters.

Planning for emergencies is an ongoing and continual process reflecting the ever-changing nature of communities. The Joint Emergency Management Plan reflects this dynamic planning process and is reviewed annually.

The Joint Emergency Management Agency is established by Bylaw No. 1055/PS/2019 and administers the Emergency Management Program on behalf of the Town of Fairview and the Municipal District of Fairview No. 136 under the guidance of the Joint Emergency Management Committee.

  • CAO, Municipal District of Fairview No. 136
  • Director and Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Municipal District of Fairview No. 136
  • Director and Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Town of Fairview
  • Designated employees from the Town of Fairview and the Municipal District of Fairview No. 136
  • Other community or government representatives upon request of the Agency

An Emergency Pet Plan can reduce stress for you and your pet during an emergency. Here are some things to think about when making your plan.

  • How will you assemble and transport pets?
  • Where will you go and what will you bring?
  • What are pet stressors and how will you manage them?
  • Is your pet friendly with people or other animals?
  • Does your pet have food and medication that requires refrigeration?

When planning, create pet friendly contact lists including hotels, kennels, shelters, friends and family for pets on short notice.

Emergencies and disasters such a barn fires, blizzards or floods are common risk in agricultural communities. Being prepared will help you protect your farm animals, livestock and property so you can overcome unexpected situations as quick as possible.

When building your plan, consider the following:

  • Build a map including buildings, key services (water, water), access points, equipment locations, and dangerous chemical storage locations. Post in each building.
  • Set muster locations, in event of evacuation location of feed and water (consider weather impacts).
  • Ensure visual identification methods (tags/tattoos), create ID records for animals and livestock.
  • Create emergency contact lists for animals (neighbors, transportation assistance, vets and feed suppliers. Post in each building.
  • Store all ID/Contact List/Site Maps onsite and digitally offsite.
